Richard N. Castañeda

1948 – 2021

Richard N. Castañeda, a resident of Houston, TX, died September 25, 2021, of a sudden heart attack. The family is deeply saddened by his sudden death at 73.

He was born on March 24, 1948, in Yorktown, TX. Richard moved to Houston at an early age.  With strong work ethics, loyalty and pride in his work, Richard retired a UAW member after 40 years and 5 months of service on February 28, 2013, as a Master Machinist.

Richard was a proud man, especially proud of his family, Mexican culture, and family history.  He will be remembered for being a father-figure to many, for coaching youth baseball in Second Ward, for his love for life, his family, gardening, collecting many things, including sports memorabilia, and restoring his 51 Chevrolet 5-Window Pickup. He was known for his backyard barbecues and listening to his favorites 50’s 60’s, Oldies and Tejano songs with a cold Coors Light. He took great pride in voting and promoting candidates with signs on his front lawn.  Richard enjoyed retirement and even adopted a few, new cats and was preparing for the annual Yorktown Western Days festival in his hometown, where family members meet for a reunion weekend of fun, food and making memories.

He is survived by his loving wife Janie; daughters Frances Castañeda Dyess, Lythia Castañeda Green and Lynda Victoria Castañeda; sons Rick Castañeda and John Castañeda, Sr.; bonus sons Tracy Garcia, Lucky Garcia and Chris Garcia; sons-in-law John Dyess and Adrian Green; daughter-in-law Michelle Castaneda; grandchildren Joann, Jessica, Stephanie, and Ricky Castañeda; Christina Fernandez, Christopher, Valerie, Joseph and Meranda Castañeda; Valentina Torrez, Adam Flores, Austin, Aaron and Adrien Green; Savannah Torres, Isaiah Castañeda and Oscar Medina; Vanessa, Danielle, Tiffany and Anthony Garcia; Lilly, Jonathan, Aiden and Sophia Garcia; Ashley and Brandon Garcia; and many other loved nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, relatives and special friends, far too numerous to name.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents Pablo and Ricarda Castañeda, by his siblings – Paul Castañeda, Antonia Reyes, Cruz Castañeda and Irene Niño; his daughter-in-law Norma Castañeda and grandson John Castañeda, Jr. Richard love to spend quality time with family and friends. He was loved and will be dearly missed by many.

The family will receive friends for a visitation from 5 – 9 p.m. on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, with a Rosary prayed at 7 p.m. at Compean Funeral Home, 2102 Broadway Blvd, Houston, TX  77012.  A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 7, 2021, at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 501 Tidwell Rd., Houston, TX 77022 and interment 12:30 p.m. at Forest Park Lawndale, 6900 Lawndale, Houston, TX 77023.

Memorial donations may be made to El Centro de Corazon at elcentrodecorazon.org, with a designation that the donation is for the Richard Castañeda Fund to help senior citizens with annual physicals.
