Tomasa
Chavez
Dec 21, 1925 — Sep 26, 2026
Tomasa Chavez, born in Pinos, Zacatecas, was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and beloved member of her family. Her life was defined by family, hard work, love, and the traditions she carried from one generation to the next.
Tomasa was born and raised in Pinos, Zacatecas, where her family made a living creating traditional clay pottery. In the 1940s, her family migrated to Texas through the Bracero era, working in the cotton fields. During those years, Tomasa’s role was to care for the workers by preparing their meals and washing their clothing. It was during this time that she learned to make homemade flour tortillas, which would become one of her most cherished specialties.
Her cooking became a treasured part of her family’s life. She lovingly prepared homemade flour tortillas for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, passing down not only recipes, but also traditions and memories that will continue for generations.
In the 1950s, Tomasa and her family moved to Tamaulipas, Mexico, where she lived through the early 1980s. In the early 1980s, she moved to Houston, Texas, to be closer to her children and grandchildren. For the last six years of her life, she made her home in Pearland, Texas.
Tomasa found joy in the simple things she loved most. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, hand embroidery, and tending to her gardens. She especially treasured traveling with her sisters, Juana and Julia, visiting family in Tamaulipas and Zacatecas and keeping those family connections strong.
Above all, Tomasa cherished her family. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, whose lives were enriched by her love, wisdom, stories, cooking, and traditions.
Her legacy lives on in the family she loved so deeply, in the traditions she passed down, and in the many memories created around her kitchen table and throughout the generations.
Tomasa Chavez will be deeply missed and forever remembered with love.
Proverbs 31:28, 31 — "Her children arise and call her blessed... Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise."
