Guela, known to many as Rebecca Rodriguez, lived a life rooted in quiet strength, sacrifice, and service. For more than 50 years, she and her husband devoted themselves to our community through Rodriguez Mercantile. Wanting to build something of their own when opportunities were limited, they chose the brave path of becoming business owners creating for themselves what the world could not easily give them.

Guela spoke very little English, yet she communicated through her work, her perseverance, and her actions. Over the years, she took on many roles seamstress, clothing seller, and more never seeking recognition and always remaining humble. She lived simply, finding value not in excess, but in purpose.

Her generosity was quiet and intentional. Only our family knew that each month she faithfully sent money to a program that supported children in poor countries. She would receive a photo of the child she was helping and carried that responsibility close to her heart, never asking for praise.

My grandmother was not openly affectionate, but she loved deeply. Her concern for her children and grandchildren never wavered. Given that she was limited in her education she was able to surpass it. She was always sharp and mindful of her surroundings. She still built a meaningful life alongside her husband one defined by hard work, dignity, and love. Her legacy is not found in words spoken, but in the lives she touched and the example she left behind.
