On October 15, 2025, Anthony “Tony” Robert Gonzales — lover of people, animals, food, music, fishing, baseball, and football — decided it was time to take his final adventure. Tony lived his life with a full heart, an open kitchen, and a soundtrack that was always a little too loud.
Tony had an infectious laugh and never met a stranger (though he might have shared a plate of food with one). He could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere — the grocery store, a garage sale, or a crowded New Orleans street. He was an excellent dancer, an enthusiastic entertainer, and a man whose smile could light up any room… preferably one that smelled like something delicious cooking.
Those who knew Tony knew his three sacred rules: never skip a meal, always root for your team (no matter how badly they’re playing), and if something’s broken, fix it. He spent most of his adult life in facilities maintenance, where he was known as a master problem solver and the guy who could fix anything. His work with the YMCA was especially meaningful to him, and he often said the organization helped him fix more than just buildings — it helped him rebuild himself.
Tony was a proud military veteran, serving in the United States Army from 1980 to 1985 where he reached the rank of SP4 and truly enjoyed his time in the service and the lifelong friends he made there. This led to him having a great appreciation for firearms and supporter of our military and first responders with many in his family serving over the years.
Tony was a lifelong animal lover who, in his later years, found joy in fostering kittens. He proudly helped five find their forever homes although he was initially not a fan of cats!
Born on April 1, 1961, Tony wore his April Fool’s birthday like a badge of honor. He was the perfect blend of humor and heart — someone who could make you laugh until you cried, then hand you a plate of something to eat to make it better.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Geraldine “Gerry” Lopez and Joaquin “Jack” Gonzales. He is survived by his wife, Tracey Gonzales; his sister, Jacqueline Gonzales-Slay; his brother, Joaquin “Jack” Gonzales; his son, Anthony Joseph Gonzales (Stephanie) and granddaughter Charli Shaffer; his grandson, Anthony Michael Gonzales; his fur baby, Ty; and countless aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and coworkers who loved him dearly.
The world is a little quieter, a little less flavorful, and the music doesn’t sound quite the same without Tony in it. But if you turn up the volume, share a good meal, and laugh loud and often — you’ll be keeping his spirit exactly where it belongs.
